Review from Neal Martin December 2015, Gevrey Chambertin
“The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin Village comes mostly from Croix des Champs, but in this vintage Mark has blended in some La Justice. It has a detailed and pure bouquet with macerated red cherries, wild strawberry and rose petals. The palate is clean and fresh on the entry with blood orange and red berry fruit, fine salinity and a taut, linear finish that shows the best of these two vineyards. Eight barrels produced.” – Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com
Review from Bill Nanson 18th November 2015, Gevrey Chambertin
“Was a single vineyard (Croix de Champs) but also got offered La Justice in 14. Started separate vinifications but found the blend so much more interesting than the individuals so now 8 barrels – ‘About 35% whole-cluster here. More zen.’
Wide and fresh with an undertow darker red fruit. Theres a round core, a more ethereal impression on the palate. This is beautifully elegant wine. Never forceful just a beauty.” – Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report
“As with all the wines I do a very exacting sorting of the fruit. Fermented in large cement ferment, which is great for heat retention. I use approximately 30-40% whole bunches. My fermentations are slow, with very little pump overs once the ferment is going I will start a very gentle punch downs, often just using my feet. Elevage in a combination of 2, 3, 4 year old wood for 12 month. I am really looking for brightness of pinot noir, lots of crunchy acidity but still showing a good structure.”
“He seems to have struck gold. His wines have an excellent balance between fruit, expression and refreshment without being in any way wimpish. The wines are also, appetisingly, bone dry.” -Jancis Robinson
Mark spent a decade working together with the late Dr. Bailey Carrodus of Yarra Yering in the Yarra Valley. His passion for making a wine that expresses the purity of the fruit and further reflects the soil they are grown is what drew him to Burgundy. He makes wines that are bright and fresh and uses a ‘hands off’ approach to create a pure expression of the terroir.
Mark is on Jancis Robinsins list of “Overperformers” for 2014.
